4 Important Decorating Tips With Wood You Should Know

Wood adds warmth and character that paint and drywall can’t. Used well, it makes a room feel finished. Used carelessly, it can make a space feel heavy or dated. Here are four tips we use on real projects.

1. Pick One Feature and Let It Lead

A shiplap fireplace wall, a slat wall behind the TV, or a set of floating shelves works best as the room’s single focal point. Too many wood features compete with each other.

2. Match Wood Tones, Don’t Copy Them

Your new wood doesn’t have to match the floor exactly. Choose a tone that’s clearly lighter or darker so it looks intentional, and keep undertones (warm or cool) consistent.

3. Mix Painted and Natural Wood

Painted board-and-batten with a natural wood mantel or shelf gives you texture without too much wood. It’s a classic combination that works in Florida homes.

4. Plan for Florida Humidity

Wood moves with moisture. Let it acclimate inside before install, seal all sides, and leave room for expansion. In bathrooms, use moisture-resistant materials or sealed hardwood.
