DIY Bathroom Fixes
Weekend Toilet Repairs: The Parts That Fix Most Problems
A running, leaking or wobbly toilet usually doesn’t need replacing. The right part and an hour on a Saturday will fix most of them.
Fix the Part, Not the Whole Toilet
Most toilet problems come down to a handful of parts: the fill valve, the flush valve, the seat or the tank. Find which one is failing and you can usually fix it with a screwdriver, a sponge and a towel.
Here’s what to look for and the parts we recommend.

Before You Start
- Turn off the water at the shutoff valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the tank.
- Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If color shows up in the bowl without flushing, the flapper or flush valve is leaking.
- Check the model or measure your tank before ordering so the part fits.
- If the toilet rocks or leaks at the floor, the wax ring or flange may need attention. That’s a bigger job worth a professional look.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my toilet keep running?
Usually a worn flapper or flush valve lets water leak into the bowl, or the fill valve isn’t shutting off. Replacing the fill and flush valve fixes most running toilets.
Can I replace a fill valve myself?
Yes. Most people can do it in under an hour with basic tools. Turn off the water and drain the tank first.
When should I replace the whole toilet?
If the bowl or tank is cracked, the toilet is very old and inefficient, or it keeps clogging, replacement often makes more sense than repair.
